Until about 10 years ago, I unknowingly and consistently made less than optimal nutritional choices, forcing me to miss out on significant moments and memories. Instead of enjoying life’s activities and adventures, I was often lying in bed, in a dark room, senses numbed by a strong prescription drug. The effects of the drug helped me to sleep off the pain and nausea associated with the chronic migraine headaches I had been plagued with for decades. My migraines would hit at unexpected times. Events or opportunities important to me, like my kids’ programs at school, experiences on vacations or celebrations honoring friends and family, were often impossible to attend. Thankfully, I became aware of and incorporated the dietary changes that eventually afforded me the freedom to plan everyday life pleasures with confidence.
Interestingly, I thought my headaches were just my luck…my genetics…and an issue to deal with for the rest of my life. Initially, I implemented these changes for completely different reasons (I’ll save that for another post) and not to rid myself of debilitating migraines. But after around 30 days, I realized a decrease in frequency, and eventually complete cessation of the pain. I don’t even remember what the name(s) of the medications were that I refused to leave my house without. And, the anxiety associated with whether or not I will be able to participate in and enjoy significant events no longer exists.
The CDC reports 6 out of 10 adults in the U.S. deal with at least one, and 4 out of 10 US adults deal with 2 or more chronic diseases. Symptoms associated with chronic disease – fatigue, brain fog, gut issues, joint pain, mood swings, headaches and more – can prevent us from living healthier, more active lives.
This is not about a specific diet program. I believe everyone’s genetic makeup is different and therefore the changes they make to benefit them will vary depending on their specific needs. My first-hand experience convinced me that habitual, healthy lifestyle changes can – and will –provide increased opportunities for a life filled with meaning, love, fun and purpose.
Incorporating changes – healthy habits – into your life is often easier said than done. Anyone can do it, but appropriate support can help you to start in the right direction and stay the course.
